Throughout the day she kept returning to the subject with mock exasperation, determined to persuade me of the error of my ways. It was vintage Ann—spirited, relentless and thoroughly good-humoured.
Our friendship deepened during two overseas visits with The Leprosy Mission England and Wales to Ethiopia and later Mozambique. Those journeys showed me a side of Ann that the public rarely saw.
She self-funded both trips, not for publicity or headlines, but because she genuinely cared about people affected by leprosy. She used every platform available to her—from newspaper columns to television appearances—to shine a light on a disease that most of the Western world had long forgotten. Her influence helped transform awareness of a condition that still condemns millions to lives of stigma as well as sickness.
In Ethiopia we visited communities living in conditions that were almost impossible to comprehend. Families lived in makeshift shelters. Sanitation was primitive. Poverty was overwhelming. Ann later wrote movingly about people sharing just a handful of pit latrines and crawling through contaminated pathways simply to reach the roadside and beg.
Seeing it with your own eyes was something else entirely.
During that trip almost our entire party succumbed to severe food poisoning. Ann spent more than five hours being violently ill on an old, what she called ‘Charabang’ bus travelling to remote villages.
Most people would have cancelled the visit.
Ann refused.
The following day she carried on visiting projects in intense heat as though sheer determination alone could overcome physical exhaustion. Meanwhile I became so ill that I ended up in hospital. Even then, Ann wouldn't leave until every planned visit had been completed.
What amazed me most wasn't simply her stamina.
It was her mind.
Despite feeling dreadful, she sat through hours of detailed project briefings, frequently disappearing to the bathroom before returning without missing a beat. Later that same day she gave a television interview in which she effortlessly recalled facts, figures and statistics from memory with astonishing precision.
Her intellect really was extraordinary.
Over the years I interviewed Ann several times, first for Radio Newark and later for my Monkey Business podcast. Last year I stayed with her at her home in Devon, where our conversations stretched long into the evening.
Usually they took place over a double brandy.
I committed what Ann regarded as a near-criminal offence by putting ice in mine.
Coming from a naval family, she had strict rules about such things. Gin, she insisted, was for before dinner. Brandy or whisky came afterwards. "It's an utterly ingrained habit," she told me. "If someone asks for gin and tonic after dinner, I'm always shocked."
That was Ann.
Disciplined, traditional and utterly unapologetic.
We certainly didn't agree on everything. She regarded my work as a hypnotherapist as "woo woo". Our discussions about nuclear power became wonderfully animated.
But disagreement never threatened our friendship.
Although being stranded in Africa after a connecting flight was cancelled—with no luggage, an exhausted photographer who was later diagnosed with tuberculosis contracted during the trip, and both of us recovering from food poisoning—wasn't exactly one of our finer moments. Looking back, it became one of those adventures we could eventually laugh about, although it certainly wasn't funny at the time.
In an age where too many people mistake disagreement for dislike, Ann showed me that it was perfectly possible to argue passionately while respecting the person sitting opposite you.
When I once asked her advice about writing a novel and explained I was taking a creative writing course, she looked at me and said simply, "Stop being stupid and just write the book."

Away from the cameras she also possessed a wicked sense of humour and a genuine warmth that many people never witnessed. Less successful were her pot plants, casualties of a life so busy with broadcasting, writing and public speaking that watering them had become something of an optional extra. I spent part of my stay trying to nurse them back to life.
To the public, Ann Widdecombe was a political force who served as an MP, minister and later an MEP with absolute conviction. She never trimmed her opinions to suit the prevailing mood and, whether people agreed with her or not, they always knew exactly where she stood.
Piers Morgan described her as a "charismatic, combative gem." Jeremy Vine remembered her as a formidable politician with a terrific sense of humour. Both were right.
Above all, she possessed an unwavering Christian faith that shaped everything she did, including her tireless work for people living with leprosy, often far from the public gaze. I saw first-hand how those visits affected her. She returned home determined not simply to tell their stories but to persuade others that they mattered.
She believed completely in God and in heaven.
If she was right—and she would undoubtedly tell me she was—I suspect she's already settled into a lively debate with the angels.

When I had more spare money I supported Lepra with a monthly donation,not in the same league at all,but I consider this charity the best value,as they deal with so much more,all associated. I’ve a friend who is troubled by my conspiratorial beliefs but he’s also troubled that he has a relative living round the corner from the Southport ‘attack’ who never saw anything, knows nobody involved nor knows anyone who knows anyone involved.

Denise if it's a high profile story, being repeated on cable news programs or going viral online, I can be certain the event was fabricated these days. I can't remember the last time anything like this was actually real.
In the first place, never just simply believe a news story. Always start from a position of disbelief. News stories have an appalling track record when it comes to veracity.
But also, pay attention to your first instinct. All of us gain a first impression based on a host of fleeting observations that we collect in the first nanoseconds of an experience, which instantly coalesce into a hunch long before our conscious minds kick in and start reacting emotionally and analytically. If, for example, you turn on the telly at random, you instantly know what you are looking at. You know whether you are looking at a movie or a documentary or a news report without having to analyse it critically. The critical thinking comes later, guided by your initial hunch.
On the afternoon of 11.09.2021 I came home from work and switched on my unlicensed TV expecting to watch the game show Countdown. On seeing an image of a burning building, My first thought was "Oh no, they're running that bloody Paul Newman movie Towering Inferno again!" But, within a nanosecond, even though the sound was muted, I realised I wasn't looking at a movie but rather at actual news footage. Notice I avoided saying 'real footage.' How did I know that so quickly? Experience based instinct.
Of course, later, on analysis, I came to understand that the narrative I was being shown and told was hokum. A disaster movie, in effect. Now, after years of experience, my skills at spotting fabricated reality have been honed to a fine point. It's not so different from being able to instantly tell a movie from a news report.
We can all tell when somebody is acting a part or is real. It just requires paying attention to that first impression and then examining the observations behind it. One of the reasons politicians and other figures in the public eye, including most prominent conspiracy theorists, cultivate such bizarre eccentricities is not just for branding, but because eccentricities make the act harder to spot. Ann Widdecombe is obviously a life actor whose character seems inspired by a Margaret Rutherford type character from an old Ealing comedy, like Miss Marple or the headmistress of St Trinians, all jolly hockey sticks and tea with the vicar, and her murder a scripted part of the plot. First of all, it seems clear that the only aspect of Ann Widdecombe's death that would invite the kind of establishment behaviour that you describe is the investigation of that death, which has been a monumental display of incompetence - either staged or because they were late to the party and tried to cobble something together in a hurry.
Second, you may or may not be right about Ann W's life, morals and behaviour. For me, despite her rhetorical competence, the reason she never made it to the top - nor wanted to - was because she was her own woman, not because she was trying to craft an image.

The reason was that I used to chat with her at length about things like past lives in Nazi Germany. She found me via some woowoo forum on Nazi reincarnations where I mentioned my encounters with people who thought they were Mengele. One of her obsessions was Reinhardt Heydrich, Hitler's second in command, whose Wewelsberg castle she had visited, as a tourist and also in dreams. I couldn't bring her name up from memory, so I googled "British woman politician died 2021" which is how I stumbled on news reports about Anne. Someone here mentioned those first seconds when you tune into a story and somehow just "know" what it's really about, and that its not what it appears. I knew nothing but I thought this is really odd - I must find out who this woman was.
So thank you for your comments because I couldn't make much sense of what they were saying about her murder, just that it was gory and sensational which instantly put me off.
I'm not implying there's any connection between her and Tamsin Williams, who was another very gifted and big-hearted woman from the south of England -- and I miss her and was shocked to hear she had died, many months later, after texting her and getting no answer.

I’ve read the article a few times but the only take away that sticks in my mind is the casual misogyny with the description of physical, personal attributes - lolling oversized mouth/sand tiger sharks teeth/pallid skin/helmet hair/overweight/frumpily dressed etc. Moreover these facts are presented as probably responsible for her lifelong chastity. The reader is assured however that this description is not cruel, just honest, so that’s ok then. Whatever the circumstances /causes of her death (highly suspect), why must it be reduced to this? People get killed all the time. Lone wolf types kill people quite regularly. I've known plenty and almost fell prey to one or 2 . Our friendship deepened during two overseas visits with The Leprosy Mission England and Wales to Ethiopia and later Mozambique. Those journeys showed me a side of Ann that the public rarely saw.
She self-funded both trips, not for publicity or headlines, but because she genuinely cared about people affected by leprosy. She used every platform available to her—from newspaper columns to television appearances—to shine a light on a disease that most of the Western world had long forgotten. Her influence helped transform awareness of a condition that still condemns millions to lives of stigma as well as sickness.
In Ethiopia we visited communities living in conditions that were almost impossible to comprehend. Families lived in makeshift shelters. Sanitation was primitive. Poverty was overwhelming. Ann later wrote movingly about people sharing just a handful of pit latrines and crawling through contaminated pathways simply to reach the roadside and beg.
Seeing it with your own eyes was something else entirely.
During that trip almost our entire party succumbed to severe food poisoning. Ann spent more than five hours being violently ill on an old, what she called ‘Charabang’ bus travelling to remote villages.
Most people would have cancelled the visit.
Ann refused.
The following day she carried on visiting projects in intense heat as though sheer determination alone could overcome physical exhaustion. Meanwhile I became so ill that I ended up in hospital. Even then, Ann wouldn't leave until every planned visit had been completed.
What amazed me most wasn't simply her stamina.
It was her mind.
Despite feeling dreadful, she sat through hours of detailed project briefings, frequently disappearing to the bathroom before returning without missing a beat. Later that same day she gave a television interview in which she effortlessly recalled facts, figures and statistics from memory with astonishing precision.
Her intellect really was extraordinary.
Over the years I interviewed Ann several times, first for Radio Newark and later for my Monkey Business podcast. Last year I stayed with her at her home in Devon, where our conversations stretched long into the evening.
Usually they took place over a double brandy.
I committed what Ann regarded as a near-criminal offence by putting ice in mine.
Coming from a naval family, she had strict rules about such things. Gin, she insisted, was for before dinner. Brandy or whisky came afterwards. "It's an utterly ingrained habit," she told me. "If someone asks for gin and tonic after dinner, I'm always shocked."
That was Ann.
Disciplined, traditional and utterly unapologetic.

Less successful were her pot plants, casualties of a life so busy with broadcasting, writing and public speaking that watering them had become something of an optional extra. I spent part of my stay trying to nurse them back to life.
To the public, Ann Widdecombe was a political force who served as an MP, minister and later an MEP with absolute conviction. She never trimmed her opinions to suit the prevailing mood and, whether people agreed with her or not, they always knew exactly where she stood.
Piers Morgan described her as a "charismatic, combative gem." Jeremy Vine remembered her as a formidable politician with a terrific sense of humour. Both were right.
To me, though, she was simply Ann.
Fiercely intelligent. Incredibly loyal. Wickedly funny. Deeply compassionate. Kind beneath the formidable exterior.
Above all, she possessed an unwavering Christian faith that shaped everything she did, including her tireless work for people living with leprosy, often far from the public gaze. I saw first-hand how those visits affected her. She returned home determined not simply to tell their stories but to persuade others that they mattered.

I'm so glad to know of Anne's work with helping with that horrible illness leprosy. I knew nothing of that. When I had more spare money I supported Lepra with a monthly donation,not in the same league at all,but I consider this charity the best value,as they deal with so much more,all associated. But I still agree with James that there is something off about this story.

Nope, you're missing a lot of important things here, at least on the federal voting shenanigans. Your vote really just shows the government that you *support* everything that *they* (on either ''side'') are proposing. You're literally showing them, "I am a psyoped, foolish, clueless person!" Also, we don't actually pick what we're voting on, people are just clueless and believe the stuff they're voting on is of utmost importance while everything gets worse and worse and more corrupt.
Voting for a 'lesser evil' doesn't make sense either, because we legally don't have to vote for any evil at all. Totally agree..... something stinks about this whole story. None of it adds up, and the way it was bought to the attention of the public was strange. Every bit of the narrative sounds off.
Denise if it's a high profile story, being repeated on cable news programs or going viral online, I can be certain the event was fabricated these days. I can't remember the last time anything like this was actually real.
In the first place, never just simply believe a news story. Always start from a position of disbelief. News stories have an appalling track record when it comes to veracity.
But also, pay attention to your first instinct. All of us gain a first impression based on a host of fleeting observations that we collect in the first nanoseconds of an experience, which instantly coalesce into a hunch long before our conscious minds kick in and start reacting emotionally and analytically. If, for example, you turn on the telly at random, you instantly know what you are looking at. You know whether you are looking at a movie or a documentary or a news report without having to analyse it critically. The critical thinking comes later, guided by your initial hunch.
On the afternoon of 11.09.2021 I came home from work and switched on my unlicensed TV expecting to watch the game show Countdown. On seeing an image of a burning building, My first thought was "Oh no, they're running that bloody Paul Newman movie Towering Inferno again!" But, within a nanosecond, even though the sound was muted, I realised I wasn't looking at a movie but rather at actual news footage. Notice I avoided saying 'real footage.' How did I know that so quickly? Experience based instinct.
Of course, later, on analysis, I came to understand that the narrative I was being shown and told was hokum. A disaster movie, in effect. Now, after years of experience, my skills at spotting fabricated reality have been honed to a fine point. It's not so different from being able to instantly tell a movie from a news report.
We can all tell when somebody is acting a part or is real. It just requires paying attention to that first impression and then examining the observations behind it. One of the reasons politicians and other figures in the public eye, including most prominent conspiracy theorists, cultivate such bizarre eccentricities is not just for branding, but because eccentricities make the act harder to spot. Ann Widdecombe is obviously a life actor whose character seems inspired by a Margaret Rutherford type character from an old Ealing comedy, like Miss Marple or the headmistress of St Trinians, all jolly hockey sticks and tea with the vicar, and her murder a scripted part of the plot. Better call in Inspector Clousseau. It's elementary.
Nowadays, I don't bother sweating over the details and running around like a dog interminably chasing it's own tale (sic). That is what these stories are intended to make you do. I just treat them as the trashy fiction they so clearly are.
She's not dead. She has retired to one of those elite Islands somewhere, where Jeffrey Epstein is the Master of Ceremonies, Osama Bin Laden is Head of Security and JFK and Marylin Monroe are the oldest residents. Or, in her case, maybe a more sapphically oriented one.

Let us take a look at times such things were occurring for real, back in the dark days of World War 2. Convoys were allowed to sail across the Atlantic Ocean without being warned of U-boat packs waiting across their path so that Jerry didn't get to know that we had broken Enigma. Thousands died because of it. Then Pearl Harbour. Churchill personally phoned Roosevelt and told him of the imminent attack on the US Naval Base. Roosevelt thanked him and did nothing because he wanted a reason to go to war, because he had always supported as best he could, Churchill, but was hand tied by Congress, etc. Recently, 9/11 where too much went on before that day, to suggest that it was anything other than a false flag. Now our own 7/7 . did you know that the numbers of people who lost their lives, allegedly in the convoys, 9/11, Pearl Harbour, were about 3,000 give or take a few. Not too many but expendable. We had Iraq and WMD's, then the race for Obama. and so on and so on. Nothing is what it seems. And the sooner we ALL realise this the better for us all and they won't be able to do it again.

First of all, it seems clear that the only aspect of Ann Widdecombe's death that would invite the kind of establishment behaviour that you describe is the investigation of that death, which has been a monumental display of incompetence - either staged or because they were late to the party and tried to cobble something together in a hurry.
Second, you may or may not be right about Ann W's life, morals and behaviour. For me, despite her rhetorical competence, the reason she never made it to the top - nor wanted to - was because she was her own woman, not because she was trying to craft an image.
Out of respect to her, I believe in her Christian story and pray that she is at peace, and oblivious to the kind of sniping that is going on.
If I were to live in Delingpole land, i fear it would be a nightmarish place where you could never believe that anything was true, or if you did someone would come along with a clever story to explain why it wasn't. This is the kind of thing that Satan would do to discourage his opponents.

The problem with what you say here is that Delingpole is not living in "Delingpole land", he's living in "pysop world", and he is not the architect of that world, merely a denizen along with the rest of us.

I am simply someone who has noticed that quite a lot of the no-moon mongers' evidence is BS (including some clearly deliberate falsehoods) and therefore, while happily accepting that not having been to the moon is well within the realm of possibility in psyop world, I remain on the fence about what actually happened.

I have no business commenting because I'm cluelessly Canadian but a few days ago I was reading Mark Crispin Miller's latest "Died Suddenly" update in which he listed political figures who up and died likely from the you-know-what.
I suddenly thought of someone he hadnt mentioned -- Tamsin Williams, a local politician from St Ives, Cornwall-- who died from no known cause at age 52 in September 10 2021. The reason was that I used to chat with her at length about things like past lives in Nazi Germany. She found me via some woowoo forum on Nazi reincarnations where I mentioned my encounters with people who thought they were Mengele. One of her obsessions was Reinhardt Heydrich, Hitler's second in command, whose Wewelsberg castle she had visited, as a tourist and also in dreams. In real life, she strikingly resembled him - you might even think she could be his daughter.
I couldn't bring her name up from memory, so I googled "British woman politician died 2021" which is how I stumbled on news reports about Anne. Someone here mentioned those first seconds when you tune into a story and somehow just "know" what it's really about, and that its not what it appears. I knew nothing but I thought this is really odd - I must find out who this woman was.
So thank you for your comments because I couldn't make much sense of what they were saying about her murder, just that it was gory and sensational which instantly put me off.
I'm not implying there's any connection between her and Tamsin Williams, who was another very gifted and big-hearted woman from the south of England -- and I miss her and was shocked to hear she had died, many months later, after texting her and getting no answer.
I'm glad to see so many of you grappling wirh some hidden secret behind this event-- that's how it struck me too.

I’ve read the article a few times but the only take away that sticks in my mind is the casual misogyny with the description of physical, personal attributes - lolling oversized mouth/sand tiger sharks teeth/pallid skin/helmet hair/overweight/frumpily dressed etc. Moreover these facts are presented as probably responsible for her lifelong chastity. The reader is assured however that this description is not cruel, just honest, so that’s ok then. Whatever the circumstances /causes of her death (highly suspect), why must it be reduced to this? Would James like to be described like this? Even if you think it’s a psyop, Anne Widdicombe did exist as a human being so why the dissection of her physical form? Me defending Delingpole that's definitely a first! If you take his remarks of those of someone who believes she must be part of the psyop to fake her death, then how can he be genuinely kind towards her or sincere with his remarks?
I’m not disputing or confirming any circumstances of her death because I don’t know. He didn’t have to be kind, he just didn’t need to be unkind and whittle her life down to her physical features/characteristics.

People get killed all the time. Lone wolf types kill people quite regularly. I've known plenty and almost fell prey to one or 2 . I've known people to seriously threaten and attempt to kill harmless old ladies despite never having harmed anyone previously. You are maybe not up to date on society. We have a nation chockfull of folks on medication who can go seriously wonky when they come off them suddenly. Ann was loudly opposed to blood sports which can be a very fractious subject .. and no doubt had many other strong views which might have impacted her local area. Heaven knows. I think the chances of her remaining secreted somewhere for years to come is very close to zero. Its simply easier to kill people than to keep them silent I would assume ? I think the main point is that we rarely if ever resolve such incidents satisfactorily so I doubt we shall ever know :( .
